Nordlys Candle and tealight holders

Nordlys is a nordic name for the northern lights ( Aurora Borealis) a nautural phenomenon that appears as dancing magical lights in the night sky.

I started to make these candleholders as a solution to all the smaller timber off cuts in the workshop. I was also interested in creating interesting textures on the timber which when combined with the grain of the woodwould create swirling patterns similar to the northern lights.

The textures were created by thinking of local produces or processes with could be used to change the wood finish.

BURNT   Using a blow torch to scorch the surface

WEATHERED Coating oak in iron sulphate solution causes  the timber to go grey like it had been driftwood
