The Shetland Collection was inspired from the traditional furniture found in the 19th century croft houses. This furniture had a beautiful timeless style which looks great in modern homes. We recommend 100% high quality American Oak because of the standard of the timber, However you can choose from a variety of other timbers like ash, elm and maple.

Heritage & Craftsmanship

Every Paparwark chair is built on the foundation of years of dedicated research into Shetland’s vernacular furniture — a tradition shaped by crofters, fishermen, and island joiners over more than two centuries. Before I ever began making these chairs, I spent years studying the originals: measuring them, sketching them, tracing their influences, and documenting the lives of the people who made and used them.

Historic Shetland furniture was born from necessity. Timber was scarce, the climate was harsh, and homes were small, smoky, and draught‑ridden. Yet from these constraints came a remarkable design language — low, sturdy armchairs for knitting and net‑mending, hooded chairs to shelter from the wind, settles that served as both seating and storage, and regional styles that varied from parish to parish.

My work continues this lineage. Every joint is traditionally morticed and tenoned for superior strength and longevity, echoing the construction methods used by generations of island makers. Panels are built to move naturally with the seasons, just as the old craftsmen designed them to survive Shetland’s shifting weather. These details aren’t decorative; they are the structural principles that allowed the original chairs to endure for over a century.

I build each piece with the same respect for material, proportion, and purpose that I discovered in my research. This is furniture made to be lived with, repaired, cherished, and passed on — a modern continuation of a tradition that once filled croft houses across the islands.

Every Paparwark piece carries our branded maker’s stamp and an individual number, marking it as a unique item in an ongoing story of Shetland craftsmanship. These chairs are not reproductions; they are the next chapter in a heritage that deserves to be preserved and carried forward.

Our solid American oak chairs are priced at £725 each (ex‑factory), with typical lead times of up to 3 months.
